Complete analysis of a music magazine

Complete analysis of a KERRANG!

‘Kerrang!’ was first published on the 6th of June 1981 as a one-off supplement in the Sounds newspaper, and is named after the onomatopoeic word that derives from the sound made when playing a power chord on a distorted electric guitar. When it was first made it was devoted to the New Wave of British Heavy Metal and the rise of hard rock acts. It became the best-selling British music newspaper in the early 2000s. The first front cover included Angus Young of AC/DC. Kerrang started off as a monthly magazine, and began to appear on a fortnightly basis later, and in 1987 it went weekly. This was probably due to the fact that the magazine was in higher demand therefore increasing the amount of magazines published in a specific time period would increase profit, meaning that it’s beneficial for a new magazine with less demand to publish monthly rather than fortnightly or weekly because with less demand less people will want to buy it on a regular basis. Kerrang! Supports multiple platforms such as a website, a digital radio station, a television radio station and others. The founder of the Kerrang magazine is Alan Lewis and is based in London, UK. It is published by Bauer Media Group, who also publish magazines like ‘heat’ or ‘Q’. The term thrash metal was introduced into the magazine by journalist Malcom Dome, while refering to the song Metal Thrashing Mad by Anthrax, which was pulished 1984. With the emergence of emo and metalcore, Kerrang! began to heavily feature this musical trend.

College Magazine Analysis

There are 4 colours, yellow, white, black and a small amount of pink. The bit that includes the pink stands out, it’s a paint splat, which relates to the text mentioning “paintballing” this is relatable to college students, making it something they’ll want to look in to. Near to the bottom right of the front cover there is some text that is coloured similar to the background making it very hard to read, this should be avoided because it makes the magazine seem unprofessional. The cover includes cover lines that are interesting to the target audience. The main image is of a young, smart looking guy that looks to be the model student with his books and cross. The font size is well thought out, it includes a varied amount of sizes, with the largest ones being the most interesting and important. Although some of the text is maybe a little too small to read clearly. There were a few fonts included, these blend together well.

Audience Questionaire Analysis

From the questionnaire I found out 90% of people said that they don’t read the current college magazine, because of this we think we should redesign it and try to attract more students to read the new and improved magazine that we will make. I will choose 3 of these five colours to use for my magazine because they were the most popular: Black, White, Red, Blue and Green. Another question we asked was how frequently people wanted to have the magazine published, the most popular options were to do it either monthly or every term, third most popular was to do it ever fortnight so because of that to cater for the 50% people that want it quite regularly, the magazine will be published monthly. The price was another thing we enquired about, with 40% of people saying that they weren’t prepared to pay for it, which means that 60% were prepared to pay some amount of money for this college magazine, so we’d try to get a price around 50p because that was the most popular option when it came to the price. We also debated what people were most interested in magazines, with the most common things being music, food, competitions, revision help, and fashion. These 5 things will be cover lines on the college magazine. We will include free stuff, like coupons in the magazine because 95% of people said they were more likely to buy the college magazine with free stuff included. The front cover needed an image so we asked what students would like to see on the front cover, we asked if they would want; a teacher; a student; Student work; or something else. The most popular were students and student work. We also asked if people would want the magazine to support multiple platforms to which 80% said yes, so the magazine will be made physically and published on the internet also. We will include adverts in the magazine because 75% of people said they wouldn’t mind adverts in the college magazine, this will maybe reduce the price of the college magazine because places will pay to have adverts in the magazine which will help to pay towards the price of making and prints the magazines. And lastly the magazine will be handed out in the reception and the coffee shop because that’s the most requested places by people for the magazines to be distributed.
